Lab Director–Wen Gao

Wen Gao received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in computer science from Harbin University of Science and Technology and Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), China, in 1982 and 1985 respectively, and received his Ph.D degree in computer science from HIT in 1988. He joined the faculty of HIT and appointed as lecturer, professor, and doctoral supervisor since 1985. He obtained another Ph.D degree in electronics engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1991, and then served as a visiting researcher at the Institute of Medical Electronics at the University of Tokyo. In 1992, he was selected as the panel member of experts in the information field of National 863 Program. In 1993, he worked as a visiting scientist in the Robot Research Institute of Carnegie Mellon University for four months. In November, 1993, he returned to China, and served as the Deputy Dean of the School of Computer and Electrical Engineering and the Dean of the School of Computer Science at HIT. In 1996, he served as the head of expert group in the information field of China’s National 863 Program. In the same year, he was selected as one of the youth talents of the “100 Talents Program” initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In 1998, he served as the Director of the Institute of Computing Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2000, he served as the executive vice president of the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and concurrently served as the vice president of the University of Science and Technology of China. In 2006, he worked as a professor at the School of Information Science and Technology of Peking University. He was elected as IEEE Fellow in 2009, as an Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2011 and as ACM Fellow in 2013.

Academician Wen Gao's main research field is artificial intelligence. He has long been engaged in researches of computer vision, pattern recognition and image processing, multimedia data compression, multi-modal interfaces and virtual reality.
