The 3rd IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Information Processing and Retrieval (MIPR), organized by the Peng Cheng Laboratory (PCL), and sponsored by Huawei Cloud, Kuaishou Technology and Hisense, was held during August 6-8, 2020 in PCL. It is for the first time that this international conference is held in China. The world’s top experts in the fields of artificial intelligence, image recognition, and multimedia signal processing at home and abroad, as well as researchers from major universities around the world, are invited to present their most recent research results and discuss the future directions and opportunities of multimedia research, focusing on multimedia information processing and retrieval, system design, verification and application.
PCL’s Director Professor Wen Gao, Deputy Director Professor Chang-Wen Chen, and Professor Ramesh Jain, Head of the Smart Healthcare Project of PCL’s Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, serve as the Honorary Co-Chairs of MIPR2020. Gary Li, Director of PCL’s Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, and Deputy Director Yonghong Tian, are the General Co-Chairs of the conference. In his opening speech, Professor Wen Gao, on behalf of PCL and the conference organizing committee, extended a warm welcome to the guests and attendees. He also noted that, as a young key laboratory in information science, PCL is open to the outstanding scholars at home and abroad. Professor Chang-Wen Chen introduced the development status of PCL in terms of international cooperation, and invited participating scholars to visit PCL for academic exchange in the future.

The conference attracted more than 200 researchers and academic scholars, and more than 1,400 as viewers online. MIPR2020 has received more than 100 high-quality papers from the multimedia community worldwide, and each submission is fully reviewed by at least three program committee members. The acceptance rate of long articles is below 20%. Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, MIPR2020 is held in a combination of online and offline mode. The three-day academic conference includes 4 keynote speeches by outstanding scientists from industry and academia, 12 paper sessions, one Panel Session on “Academic or Market”, and an Innovation Forum—“The New Era of Multimedia”, and a one-day Workshop “AI-ART”.
The 3rd IEEE MIPR is one of the large-scale international academic conferences hosted by PCL this year, to enhance the cooperation and exchanges between PCL and the international academia.
